Chicago Police Sailing Association
“I really don't know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it's because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it's because we all came from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came.”
Spoken by President John F. Kennedy to the America’s Cup crew September of 1962.
In March of 2016 a new club for Chicago Police Officers was developed. The Chicago Police Sailing Association provides an environment for fellow Officers to experience and share together what I believe to be one of the most exciting and fulfilling sports to participate in. In order for the club to establish and maintain recognition through out the sailing community participation in Regattas (sailboat racing) is essential. One of the core goals of the club is to have sailboats manned by Chicago Police Officers participating in the major races of Lake Michigan e.g. the Chicago Race to Mackinac, Tri-State and many other sail competitions. Sailing experience is not a requirement for participation. Through successful growth members will have an opportunity to learn and become exposed to sailing. Participation is open to both active and retired members. An added goal that we would like to see accomplished is to develop a program within the club that would provide sailing opportunities for our catastrophically injured Officers. Disabled Officers can be equipped to safely board and enjoy the same feeling of wind, water and freedom experienced on a sailboat. We are also hoping to create participation and sailing opportunities for the children of Fallen Chicago Police Officers.
Most important as always we must never forget our Fallen Officers. The sailing club will donate proceeds of fund raising to support any effort that supports surviving family members of our Fallen Officers. Our most successful effort is the creation of a sailing race called Gold Star Regatta Chicago where sailors can individually raise funds through donations to their registered boat. Sponsorships and individual donations are also encouraged to help support the surviving family members of our fallen anytime for the Gold Star Regatta Race.
Thank you. CPSA President Marlon Harvey.
