Chicago Police Sailing Association

CPSA Leukemia Cup 2017 from deck of Magg

      Our Story

“I really don't know why it is that all of us are so committed to the sea, except I think it's because in addition to the fact that the sea changes, and the light changes, and ships change, it's because we all came from the sea. And it is an interesting biological fact that all of us have in our veins the exact same percentage of salt in our blood that exists in the ocean, and, therefore, we have salt in our blood, in our sweat, in our tears. We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea - whether it is to sail or to watch it - we are going back from whence we came.”

Spoken by President John F. Kennedy to the America’s Cup crew September of 1962.

The Chicago Police Sailing Association was created March of 2016. It was developed to provide an environment for Police Officers to experience what I believe to be one of the most exciting and fulfilling sports to participate in. In order for the club to establish and maintain recognition through out the sailing community participation in Regattas (sailboat racing) is essential. One of the goals of the club is to have sailboats manned by Chicago Police Officers participating in the major races of Lake Michigan e.g. the Chicago Race to Mackinac, Tri-State and many other sail competitions. Sailing experience is not a requirement for participation. Through successful growth members will have an opportunity to learn and become exposed to sailing. Participation is open to both active and retired members. Gold Star Family members are welcome as well. An additional  long term goal we would like to see accomplished is to develop a program that provides sailing opportunities for our catastrophically injured Officers. Disabled Officers can be equipped to safely board and enjoy the same feeling of wind, water and freedom experienced on a sailboat.

Most important as always we must never forget our Fallen Officers. The sailing club will donate proceeds of fund raising to support any effort that supports surviving family members of our Fallen Officers. Our most successful effort is the creation of a sail race called the Gold Star Regatta Chicago. Sponsorships and donations are a key element of the Gold Star Race to help support the surviving family members of our fallen Officers.

Thank you, CPSA President Captain Marlon E. Harvey.
